Training

Joton provides operational and technical training for rig electricians and motor men.

Each course can be individually tailored to suit the rig type and the level of expertise of the trainees. Topics covered include generator start-up and synchronising, SCR troubleshooting, power limit calibration, theory of operation, PLC controllers, electrical safety, using an oscilloscope for fault-finding.

Training can be delivered at a location of your choice; either in London (which will include classroom based training at our office and practical work at our manufacturing facility at Bracknell, Berkshire) or, if you prefer, training can be conducted at your premises in which case it will only be a classroom style course. Courses can be conducted in English or French.

We can also provide training on your rig for a unique training experience which can actually save costs.

SCR Training Courses

Courses are tailored to suit the technical expertise of the attendees. A course for technicians with little or no knowledge of SCR systems covers many of the subjects that a more experienced engineer will attend, but in the latter case subjects are covered in greater depth. A typical 4-day programme is as follows:

Day 1

Introduction
Basic Concepts
Rig Machinery and Auxiliary Motors
Shunt and Series DC Motors
Electrical Safety

Basic electrical formulae
Three-phase principles
Real and Reactive Power
Rectification
Contactors and Circuit Breakers

Day 2

Generator Speed Control
Generator Excitation
AC Modules
Load Sharing
Power Limit

Motor Control Centres
Auxiliary Motor Control
Ground Fault Detection
Sprocket Slip
Field Supplies

Day 3

DC Motor Control (SCRs)
Dynamic Braking
Regenerative Braking
DC Control Module

Electronic Components
SCR Puck Replacement
Troubleshooting techniques
Using an Oscilloscope for Fault Finding

Day 4

Question and Answer Session

Exam and Presentation

PLC Training Courses

More and more SCR systems now use PLC controllers for logic control and diagnostics. Joton have a specially tailored course to introduce engineers and technicians to PLC controllers including fault finding, basic diagnostics and elementary programming. Training is based around the three most common makes of PLC used on rigs: Siemens, Allen-Bradley and GE Fanuc.

PLC training courses can be conducted separately or as part of a general SCR course.
